Did you know that 2020 is a Leap Year?

Leap year is the practice of adding an extra day to the calendar as a corrective measure. It actually takes longer than 365 days for the earth to orbit the sun. To be precise it takes 365 days, 5 hours, 48 minutes, and 46 seconds. If we let those extra hours build up over a few hundred years it could change when our seasons begin.

Leap year usually occurs every 4 years with some exceptions. Years that you can divide by 4 are leap years, except for years that exactly divisible by 100. For example the years 1700, 1800, and 1900 were not leap years, but 1600 and 2000 were. Leap day is named after the Arch Bishop of York ST. Oswald, who died on February 29, 992.

Here are a few fun facts about leap year:

  • People in Greece say that it is bad luck to marry during a leap year.

  • The chances of being born on a leap day are 1 in 1,461

  • Some say if you propose to someone on leap day they can’t refuse

  • Anthony, Texas and Anthony, New Mexico are the self proclaimed Leap Year Capitols of the World.

  • There is a leap year cocktail. It is called none other than Leap Year Cocktail !!!!

    2/3 gin

    1/6 marnier

    1/6 sweet vermouth
